RTA Takes on the 2021 TIFF Next Wave Festival (featuring Natalie Paton)

Last weekend, I had the pleasure of virtually attending the TIFF Next Wave film festival. Along with my peers under the age of 25, I got to see a bunch of movies and attend workshops for free.  Ryerson was well represented at the festival, including a short film by RTA’s very own Natalie Paton. Now in second year, Paton’s Kaudo (The Gift) was filled with RTA-student names in the credits. I was lucky to have a chat with Natalie, available later in this article! Despite just running 8 minutes, Natalie subtly creates a bond between the viewer and family in […]

The Ever-Growing Film Industry in Toronto

As a media student here at Ryerson, I have always been interested to hear when there are new films shooting in and around Toronto. It is always exciting to hear when a big film or TV series has come to our city to film, fueling the industry and providing opportunity for the people of Toronto.  I can recall a night in my first year at Ryerson, going out with some friends and walking down Yonge Street looking for a place to eat when all of a sudden we had been transported back in time. We looked around us and the […]

Quick & Easy Air Fryer Snacks

For starters, do not let this title mislead you. Although these recipes are catered towards making snacks in an air fryer, these are definitely doable in a toaster oven or regular oven. I have made these snacks to munch on both during and in between classes. They are so easy to make, they only take a few minutes, and they never disappoint. Before getting into things, I would like to mention that all air fryers (just like ovens) work slightly differently in terms of heat and time so the cooking times might need to be moderated based on your appliance.  […]

4 Genres of Music That Help With Studying

Midterm season has arrived and I know how difficult studying can get, especially when we are stuck at home where there are so many distractions around us. Having said this, I am here to suggest four different genres that you can listen to while studying.  Now, there is no scientific research that proves that genres like classical music or lo-fi music help improve studying skills but, after doing some research there are a lot of people who have seemed to study better with these genres. It could be a placebo type of situation but nonetheless, these people including myself have […]

Why You Should Give Wandavision a Chance

A spoiler-free review on why you shouldn’t touch that dial! After a year and a half long hiatus due to COVID-19, the Marvel Cinematic Universe is back in crime-fighting and cape-wearing action. Wandavision, the first of many shows released on streaming for Disney+, is a weekly drama/mystery/horror wrapped in the aesthetics of different eras of sitcoms. Oh, and they’re superheroes, did I mention that? Image Credit: Vulture.com At first Wandavision might seem like it’s biting off much more than it can chew, and I think the heavy marketing push prior to it’s debut didn’t exactly capture it’s appeal. At the […]

6 Awesome Speed-Runs That Will Help You Kill Time Between Classes

So after digging up my old Nintendo console during quarantine, I was introduced to the insane world of “speed-running”, which is basically when pro-video game players finish a video game as quickly as they can. These “speedrunners” use out-of-the-box tricks and under -the-radar glitches to win the entire game in record speed. Here are my favourites so far: 1. Mario Kart 8 Deluxe by AeonFrodo There is something so incredibly calming about watching someone else play a racing game at top speed. In this speed run, the runner goes through every track, cutting through bushes, jumping over roads and speeding […]

4 NHL Players Who Need to Step up Early This Season

photo: Dan Toulgoet, Glacier Media The 2020-2021 NHL season may have only just begun, but it has been full of surprise. The start to the season is always when players are put under the microscope, especially if they don’t start off very hot. There have been more than a handful of players who have not performed up to their expectations early on this season but below are 4 of the most noteworthy players who need to start improving.  Igor Shestyorkin There were a lot of expectations for the New York Rangers rookie goaltender ahead of his first full season in […]

Twitch, Roleplaying, and the Future of Interactive Storytelling

Dungeons and Dragons, and roleplaying on a larger level, is starting to make waves. It’s always been known for its unfortunate reputation as this incredibly nerdy, awkward thing that people do in their basements, never seeing the light of day. But as times change and as it skyrockets in popularity, it’s slowly becoming the new frontier for storytelling today. Also it’s just really fun. For the uninitiated, Dungeons and Dragons (or D&D) is a tabletop, roleplaying game where players act as characters they’ve created. They are then thrust into a story constructed by a game master (GM), who guides them […]

The 5 HOTTEST Bath and Body Works/White Barn Candles: Joy’s Picks!

Although it meant waiting in a two-hour lineup, the annual Bath and Body Works Candle Day weekend sale was one I simply couldn’t miss.  Just in time for Christmas, Candle Day was the perfect one-stop gift shop for friends and fam.  Intentionally selecting candles for my loved ones with fragrances that reminded me of them, added that personal touch I aim for when gifting, and with the modest price point of $10.95 per luxurious 3-wick candle, you know I had to add to my collection.  Today’s blog will be a scent diary through my top five favourite candles from the […]

Grown Down a Little

When we’re young, we all dream about growing up. We wear our dad’s button-ups, and our mum’s heels, even though both are bigger than our entire being. But we play, and we dream about what it would be like to fit in either one, have our own house, and become a doctor, or ballerina, or any of the other thousand things we wanted to be when we grow up.  So when exactly did we lose that spark, and the reality of practicality took it away? We hit 18, and we graduate high school, and we’re pushed to make a choice […]

Positive Pandemic Moments

We are officially one month into 2021. And as we were entering the new year, I wanted to reflect on some of the positive things to have come out of the past year with the COVID-19 pandemic changing our everyday lives. It has certainly been an adventure to watch the way the world has changed over the course of the virus. From work to school to our social lives, I’m not sure there’s a single person who has been completely unaffected by the new climate of our society. In my last blog post I talked about some of the films […]
