Why Does the US Keep Remaking International Films?

At the 2020 Academy Awards, Parasite (2019) made history as the first foreign film to ever win Best Picture, posing a brighter future for many international movies that fail to receive recognition among the wider American audience. Parasite’s win caused a momentary shift in this pattern, prompting many to explore unfamiliar titles and have a greater appreciation for non-domestic and non-English language cinema. Parasite’s historic win, Image Credit: The Playlist Western production companies caught on to Parasite’s popularity, however, with HBO almost immediately picking it up to remake into a limited series. While many were excited, others criticized it, ultimately

A Coming of Age Story – A Review of Beans

Every year I look forward to attending TIFF Next Wave and spending a fun weekend with friends watching films chosen by a committee of twelve high school students. It’s a festival that supports and helps to grow the next generation of film enthusiasts and filmmakers. Their stories are the ones being told on the screen. It gives otherwise marginalized voices in the film industry a chance to share their stories and give them opportunities to explore the industry through their eyes. Nothing exemplifies this more than the movie Beans, directed by Tracey Deer. I heard a lot of buzz around

My Spotify Playlists Were Robbed?

Imagine waking up one morning to find your playlists decreased by over 100 songs. Well, that was the case for thousands of International K-Pop fans, including myself. On March 1st, we woke up to the removal of over 100 songs by various Korean artists under the company of Kakao M – a company that runs the biggest streaming platform in Korea called Melon. Fans described this situation as the K-Pop Version of Infinity War and the memes for the pain we are going through are too good to not share. Albums to Listen to While Doing School Work

I’m not sure about you, but I find it hard to stay on task when I am in a silent environment. When I study, I like it to be silent, but when I’m doing basic school work, I like to occupy my brain some other way. I like to use this time to listen to new albums or to listen to my go-tos. So without further ado, here are some of my favorite albums to listen to while doing school work (no particular order). If you really want to focus on what you’re doing while simultaneously having some background music

5 Recipes To Add More Hemp Into Your Diet

Image credit: Allegra Smith-Herriott Hemp. An environmental powerhouse and an underrated superfood. Growing up on a hemp farm, I have been immersed in the health food industry from a very young age. I have also been forced to experience and eventually acquire a taste for hemp.  Now hemp food products and recipes have come a long way. I was no doubt a guinea pig for endless recipe experiments that more often ended up in the trash. Hemp can have a very strong flavour making it difficult to consume. But hemp has tremendous health benefits and should undeniably be a staple

5 Famous Screenwriters Reveal the One Weird Thing That Makes Their Process Unique

Writing a screenplay is not easy, but these famous writers have figured out some cool ways to up their writing game and create amazing work. Here are some of their strangest secrets to success: 1. Greta Gerwig only outlines when she’s stuck Image credit: deadline.com Greta says: “I don’t outline. I don’t outline! I definitely don’t outline before I start writing. There is a moment when I do outline, but it’s only after I have a great deal of material. I find if I outline before I write, it’s the fastest way to kill all my ideas. Somehow it makes

Natural Products to Integrate into Your Everyday Health and Beauty Routine!

Hey Naturalistas!  When I think of the concept of “natural” or “organic”, I initially consider it in connection to food, but to confirm my thought, I decided to ask my Instagram followers: Turns out, the majority of them also attribute the terms with food! But lately I’ve been challenging myself to consider other ways in which my body absorbs.  Health and Beauty products are a key method of consumption, they are typically applied directly to our skin and absorbed.  With this in mind, I’ve made an effort to adjust my Health and Beauty products to include natural or organic versions

RTA Takes on the 2021 TIFF Next Wave Festival (featuring Natalie Paton)

Last weekend, I had the pleasure of virtually attending the TIFF Next Wave film festival. Along with my peers under the age of 25, I got to see a bunch of movies and attend workshops for free.  Ryerson was well represented at the festival, including a short film by RTA’s very own Natalie Paton. Now in second year, Paton’s Kaudo (The Gift) was filled with RTA-student names in the credits. I was lucky to have a chat with Natalie, available later in this article! Despite just running 8 minutes, Natalie subtly creates a bond between the viewer and family in

The Ever-Growing Film Industry in Toronto

As a media student here at Ryerson, I have always been interested to hear when there are new films shooting in and around Toronto. It is always exciting to hear when a big film or TV series has come to our city to film, fueling the industry and providing opportunity for the people of Toronto.  I can recall a night in my first year at Ryerson, going out with some friends and walking down Yonge Street looking for a place to eat when all of a sudden we had been transported back in time. We looked around us and the

Quick & Easy Air Fryer Snacks

For starters, do not let this title mislead you. Although these recipes are catered towards making snacks in an air fryer, these are definitely doable in a toaster oven or regular oven. I have made these snacks to munch on both during and in between classes. They are so easy to make, they only take a few minutes, and they never disappoint. Before getting into things, I would like to mention that all air fryers (just like ovens) work slightly differently in terms of heat and time so the cooking times might need to be moderated based on your appliance.

4 Genres of Music That Help With Studying

Midterm season has arrived and I know how difficult studying can get, especially when we are stuck at home where there are so many distractions around us. Having said this, I am here to suggest four different genres that you can listen to while studying.  Now, there is no scientific research that proves that genres like classical music or lo-fi music help improve studying skills but, after doing some research there are a lot of people who have seemed to study better with these genres. It could be a placebo type of situation but nonetheless, these people including myself have

Why You Should Give Wandavision a Chance

A spoiler-free review on why you shouldn’t touch that dial! After a year and a half long hiatus due to COVID-19, the Marvel Cinematic Universe is back in crime-fighting and cape-wearing action. Wandavision, the first of many shows released on streaming for Disney+, is a weekly drama/mystery/horror wrapped in the aesthetics of different eras of sitcoms. Oh, and they’re superheroes, did I mention that? Image Credit: Vulture.com At first Wandavision might seem like it’s biting off much more than it can chew, and I think the heavy marketing push prior to it’s debut didn’t exactly capture it’s appeal. At the

6 Awesome Speed-Runs That Will Help You Kill Time Between Classes

So after digging up my old Nintendo console during quarantine, I was introduced to the insane world of “speed-running”, which is basically when pro-video game players finish a video game as quickly as they can. These “speedrunners” use out-of-the-box tricks and under -the-radar glitches to win the entire game in record speed. Here are my favourites so far: 1. Mario Kart 8 Deluxe by AeonFrodo There is something so incredibly calming about watching someone else play a racing game at top speed. In this speed run, the runner goes through every track, cutting through bushes, jumping over roads and speeding

photo: Dan Toulgoet, Glacier Media The 2020-2021 NHL season may have only just begun, but it has been full of surprise. The start to the season is always when players are put under the microscope, especially if they don’t start off very hot. There have been more than a handful of players who have not performed up to their expectations early on this season but below are 4 of the most noteworthy players who need to start improving.  Igor Shestyorkin There were a lot of expectations for the New York Rangers rookie goaltender ahead of his first full season in
