March 8th was International Women’s Day, where we celebrate women’s achievements and aim to create a gender-equal world without bias. I celebrated by watching a few films that were made by women or feature women’s stories heavily. I realized that before this, I never went out of my way to watch movies made by women and their stories. It’s something, as an avid film fan and supporter of gender equality, that I wish I did more. Now it is my goal this year to watch more films made by women and their stories. So if you’re like me and want to celebrate women in film or want to broaden your film horizons; here’s a list of women directors and movies that feature women’s stories that I encourage you to check out.
All these films recommended are ones that I have seen or been recommended for me, so I’m just scratching the surface here. There are plenty more films and women directors to be recognized, so I highly recommend you also check out Indiewire’s list here: Indiewire, check out some lists on Letterboxd and do a little bit of further research on your own if you’d like.
