5 Shows on Netflix That Are Actually Worth Watching

Posted on February 11, 2022

If you’re like me, you’ve likely spent hours scrolling through Netflix for a new show to watch. Personally, I find it quite difficult to navigate the site and find shows that are actually worth watching. There are so many films and TV shows on there that I usually get overwhelmed with the options and can’t pick out the good ones from the bad ones. Despite this, I’ve managed to find some shows that I really enjoy. Here are 5 of my favourite shows on Netflix that I think are worth giving a watch.

Gilmore Girls

Starting off strong, we have Gilmore Girls. This show is about a mother and daughter duo – Rory and Lorelai Gilmore. I love everything about this show from the quaint town of Stars Hollow to Lorelai’s not-so-stable relationship with her own mother, Emily Gilmore. I have even found myself trying to emulate Rory in my own life from reading classic books like The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn to purchasing a so-called “Rory sweater.” Gilmore Girls has definitely become my feel-good, comfort show and is my go-to, especially in the fall and winter. If you are looking for a laid-back, wholesome show, you should definitely add Gilmore Girls to the top of your list.

Peaky Blinders

Next, is a show nowhere near the description of laid-back and wholesome. Peaky Blinders is a violent period piece set after WWI that follows the rise of the Peaky Blinders gang headed by Thomas Shelby. I decided to start watching this show kind of on a whim as it is not a storyline that I usually gravitate towards. However, I was pleasantly surprised and found myself really intrigued by the combination of crime, romance, and power, not to mention the superb acting, music, and locations. This is definitely one of the best TV series that I have ever watched and I would one-hundred percent recommend it to anyone and everyone, even if it is a little bit different than what you usually watch.

Sex Education

Another one of my favourite shows on Netflix is Sex Education. As the name suggests, the main storyline is centered around Otis and Maeve who set up a sex therapy service at their high school to give advice to their classmates. It definitely has some mature topics and themes but at the same time it is lighthearted and hilarious. I think it is very successful in providing a more realistic take on teenagers’ lives as well as the social issues that affect them. It also helps to destigmatize a lot of topics that I don’t see talked about as much on mainstream television. I definitely recommend watching this show especially if you are looking for a good laugh.

This Is Us

This Is Us is hard to describe because it is so many things all at once – heartbreaking, relevant, honest, etc. It is centered around the lives of the three Pearson siblings, Kate, Randall and Kevin and explores the ways their lives are intertwined with each other. I love this show because it is so complex. There are so many secondary characters and flashbacks that leave you with questions but they always have importance and tie in perfectly to the main storyline. If you are specifically looking for a show to binge watch you should definitely watch This Is Us because the drama and cliffhangers will keep you interested throughout the entire series.

The Queen’s Gambit

Last but certainly not least is The Queen’s Gambit starring Anya Taylor-Joy. This is another one that I wasn’t sure if I would like because it is a bit different from what I usually watch but I ended up really enjoying it. It is a period piece about Beth Harmon – an orphaned child who becomes a chess prodigy. Throughout the series you watch her quick rise to fame and the struggles that come with it such as addiction, wealth, and childhood trauma. As someone who knows absolutely nothing about chess, I thoroughly enjoyed this show. This is a limited series so if you are looking for something that is short while still being rewarding, this is a must-watch.

There you have it, five series on Netflix that are actually worth it. Happy binge-watching!
