Photo credit: Instagram, Malcolm McEwan (@malcolmmcewan) If you’re anything like me, you love finding smaller artists or bands with loads of talent and the potential to grow. Meet Alternative R&B/Soul artist, sahara. Originally from Vancouver, BC, sahara moved to Toronto back in May of 2018 and “after visiting the city for the first time that January, [she] applied to York & Ryerson and was accepted to both for business. [Her] intention going into the move was to get settled over the summer and head back to school in September.” That summer was soon filled with unexpected song-writing and music became

Review of Captain Marvel

Posted by FCAD IT on  March 16, 2019
Captain Marvel is everything you’d expect from the first Marvel film with a lead female character: badass. Watching the origin story of one of the most powerful superheroes in the Marvel Universe made me even more stoked for Avengers: Endgame. That being said, I agree with the current rating on IMDB, 7.1 out of 10. Although the characters and actions scenes are captivating, the climax is basic and the humour cliché. Let me just state that my initial doubt in Brie Larson playing Carol Danvers/Captain Marvel was quickly shattered. Never seeing her play this type of role before, I

Ghosts, demons, clowns, and serial killers have been the staples of horror movies. It’s the basic horror movie formula that has been perfected and ruined many times. They feed in our physical fears. However, as the genre evolves, more filmmakers are looking at psychological horror, which messes with our minds and finds new horrors that are hidden in our everyday lives. Think of Get Out, Hereditary, Babadook, or The Haunting of Hill House. The new sub-genre of horror is becoming increasingly popular and the newest addition to the collection is Velvet Buzzsaw. Directed by Dan Gilroy, the Netflix film stars

New In The Vegan World

Posted by FCAD IT on  March 10, 2019
So, I’m vegan. I have been for over 3 years actually! And it’s a huge part of my life. But it can also be sometimes problematic in my life too. It is sometimes hard to find vegan options when I’m out at restaurants with my friends or family who aren’t vegan. Or when I’m shopping and so many brands aren’t vegan because they test on animals. There’s a lot of non vegan things in the world. The good news is, this year so far has been MONUMENTAL in terms of the number of new vegan products. There have been huge

The Umbrella Academy Review

Posted by FCAD IT on  March 3, 2019
By now, you’ve probably heard of the Netflix show released a couple weeks ago, The Umbrella Academy. The show is based on the comic book series created by Gerard Way, the lead vocalist of the punk rock band, My Chemical Romance. Hence, you can already get a sense of the strangely brilliant mind behind this story. Heads up – everything I mention about The Umbrella Academy is in the trailers, so there are no spoilers. The first episode begins in 1989. 43 not pregnant women unexpectedly give birth. Sir Reginald Hargreeves, billionaire, offers a large sum of money to the

2019 Oscars Predictions and Controversies Another year of film has come and gone and if you have been paying close attention on social media, the lead up to the Oscars has been a rollercoaster. First it was Kevin Hart dropping out of the job of the host due to past homophobic comments that upset a lot of people. Next the possible introduction of the category of most popular film, offended some people because it seemed like the Academy was not taking some films seriously. Then the Academy decided they would not air the winners of important categories such as Cinematography.

Mickalene Thomas: Femmes Noires “To see yourself and for others to see you is a form of validation… I’m interested in that very mysterious and mystical line that is how we relate to each other in the world.”   This is artist Mickalene Thomas’s thesis statement for her new exhibition at the AGO, Femmes Noires, which explores how Black women are represented in art and popular culture. Each work is politically charged and vibrant, with inspiration from artistic movements such as Impressionism, Cubism, Dada, and the Harlem Renaissance. Each work is also shockingly different: Thomas’s exhibition ranges from paintings,
