Do you know that feeling of being with a group of people that share a passion for the same thing? Whether it’s at a concert or in a classroom, you know that everyone is drawn there because they truly love it. You feel a sense of community一almost unification一and there’s an innocent joy to being a part of it. At least that’s how I’d describe the feeling when I watched Spider-Man: No Way Home in theatres this past December. Before I begin, don’t worry, there aren’t any spoilers here!

The long-anticipated film hit theatres on December 17, 2021. People were eager to watch after months of rumours, spoilers, and discussions on various social media platforms. From the return of household names like Green Goblin and Doc Ock, to leaked set pictures from the production, much speculation was circling the internet as fans waited for news from Sony and Marvel. When the first teaser dropped for the film, its massive popularity broke viewership records that were once held by Avengers: Endgame, another Marvel film.

The “multiversal madness”, as described by Inverse, was a huge success among fans. They meticulously examined every poster and every video during promotions; everything from the tiniest of details in promotional posters to inspecting keyframes in videos. This created lots of hype for fans of the beloved friendly neighbourhood superhero. The film also highlighted the talent of the director, Jon Watts, in creating a movie that combined all the past Spider-Man series into a single storyline. This multiversal concept is not commonly seen in mainstream movies and Watts’ work on Spider-Man: No Way Home may be an inspiration to future superhero filmmakers. He was able to portray an interesting story and live up to the film’s hype, without the confusion of intertwining different universes.

The fans’ love for Spider-Man almost directly translated to its box office success. This film recently surpassed Black Panther as the fourth movie of all time with the highest gross income. According to Gold Derby, Spider-Man: No Way Home could beat Avatar’s $760 million with its $721 million success from the box office. And according to Deadline, it is the sixth film of all time with a gross of $1.69 billion. Not only does this immense success showcase the character’s popularity in the media, but also the audience’s desire to see more of Spider-Man in the future. There is no doubt that this film will keep fans engaged with the Marvel Cinematic Universe and entice them to watch the Marvel Phase 4 releases.

It doesn’t matter if you are a huge Marvel fan or not, watching Spider-Man: No Way Home is guaranteed to give you goosebumps. Whether that is because of its plot, the cinematography, or simply the crowd’s reactions, you will be left in awe. As a casual Marvel enjoyer watching this film in theatres, I was not disappointed by my experience. Watching the action scenes on the big screen and hearing the crowd react enhanced my viewing even more. There is something magical about a group of people with a shared love for a story, especially when it comes to passionate superhero fans. Spider-Man: No Way Home holds lots of power over its enthusiastic audience, but it must not forget that “with great power comes great responsibility.”
