I wanted to do something different for this week’s article and I decided to share my thoughts on my ALL TIME FAVOURITE movie, Shrek. I can’t even begin to tell you how many times I’ve watched this movie along with any other spin-offs related to Shrek. I’ve watched the Shrek films so often that my friends and family associate the movies with me :’D I think it may be a bit of an unhealthy obsession and I wish I could talk about all four of the movies today but we’ll just focus on the 2nd one for now.
Where do I even begin?
Let’s start with the plot. Because this is the second movie, Shrek and Princess Fiona are already together and are on their honeymoon. Of course, Prince Charming still finds a way to get Princess Fiona to be with him. And with the help of his mother, the fairy godmother, he almost succeeds. Shrek then goes through a whole transformation process turning human to please Princess Fiona and as a result, Prince Charming swoops in and pretends to be Shrek. Now, Shrek tries to get back to Princess Fiona before midnight to stop the kiss that Charming and Fiona are supposed to share in order for Fiona to fall in love with Charming instead. Just like any other children’s film, Shrek makes it just in time and asks Fiona to kiss HIM instead so they can stay human together (which is what Shrek thought she wanted). However, Princess Fiona doesn’t kiss him because she wants to be with ‘the OGRE she fell in love with.’ The clock strikes twelve and they transform back into ogres and BOOM, happily ever after.
I said all of this to say that the plot of the story is INCREDIBLE! Firstly, the movie delivered multiple genres into one film– It had romance, action, comedy and drama! And not to mention the lesson that we learn in the process — You don’t have to change yourself for the one you love because if they really love you, they’ll love you for who you are (*wipes tear*).
Don’t get me started on the soundtrack!! They provided bops after bops and they left NO crumbs. I loved it so much that I bought the soundtrack… and I have no regrets. I also listened to it so much that I was able to pinpoint where each song was played in the movie. [Addicted much– yes, I know :’( I can’t help it, It’s TOO great]. The songs are so singable, and boppable and works super well with the film to continue telling its story!
Another reason why I can’t get tired of watching this film is the fact that the more I watch it, the more ‘adult jokes’ I pick up. There are sooo many easter eggs in there that you would completely overlook as a child. So each time you watch it, you find something new– how is that not a reason to rewatch the movie?!
Before I go on and on about why I love this film, I’ll stop here… I’ve already mentioned the main points as to why Shrek films are unbeatable! They incorporate so much and STILL make it suitable for kids– GENIUS!
Though I didn’t get to speak on the other movies, I’ll finish off with a personal ranking:
- Shrek 2
- Shrek
- Shrek the Third
- Shrek Forever After
