2022’s Biggest Night for Music

A few months ago, I wrote an article about the 64th Grammy Awards nominations. The star-studded list created lots of discussion for fans, and this past week, we got to see who took home a Grammy. On April 3, 2022, the annual award show took place at the MGM Grand Garden Arena in Las Vegas. Some of the biggest names in music were in attendance as they had their chance to shine through various performances throughout the night. In this article, I’ll focus on some of the most popular artists and mainstream songs.
The show opened with Silk Sonic performing “777” in an exciting live performance. Bruno Mars and Anderson .Paak showed the audience how much fun they had together and brought everyone back in time with their retro song. The duo won Record of the Year, Song of the Year, Best R&B Song, and Best R&B Performance for “Leave the Door Open.”
We also received a heartful performance by Olivia Rodrigo as she sang “Driver’s License.” The ballad was sung in a perfect set, and it showed the world what Rodrigo could do. The 19-year-old also took home multiple Grammys for her debut album “Sour,” winning Best Pop Vocal Album, Best New Artist, and Best Pop Solo Performance. Rodrigo made her mark at this year’s Grammys, and the world is excitedly watching her career grow.
Fans were happy to see amazing performances by Billie Eilish and Finneas, Lil Nas X, and BTS. Eilish and Finneas gave a heart-wrenching rendition of “Happier Than Ever” on top of their simple yet effective set. The two delivered a strong performance with fake rain, fog, and live guitar. Lil Nas X also put on a huge performance for viewers as he performed “Montero” and “Industry Baby,” featuring a special appearance from Jack Harlow. His outfits and dancers created a fun performance for everyone and helped show the world what Lil Nas X is all about. Finally, fans from around the world received a performance from BTS. The group sang their hit song “Butter” with a spy-themed performance. Their detailed set allowed all seven members to shine and display their title of international superstars. Unfortunately, these artists didn’t receive any awards that night, but we look forward to what they’ll bring next year.
There were many more breathtaking performances by artists, but the night’s biggest award for Album of the Year was given to Jon Batiste for “We Are.” This is the first time a Black artist has won this award since 2008. After providing a fun and meaningful performance of “Freedom” earlier in the night, this rightfully awarded Grammy highlights the detail and talent that Batiste constantly creates through his music.
Many other well-known artists won some big awards that Sunday night as well. Doja Cat and SZA won Best Pop Duo Performance for their hit song “Kiss Me More.” I can truthfully say that everyone rejoiced with them when they won and could tell that they deserved the Grammy. Best R&B Album was awarded to Jazmine Sullivan for “Heaux Tales,” and Best Rap Album was given to Tyler, the Creator for “Call Me If You Get Lost.” Baby Keem and Kendrick Lamar won Best Rap Performance for “Family Ties” and “Jail” by Kanye West, and Jay-Z won Best Rap Song. Chris Stapleton won Best Country Album for “Starting Over,” and Best Rock Album was given to the Foo Fighters for “Medicine at Midnight”. A complete list of the winners can be found on Pitchfork.
The 64th Grammys was a big night for music. Everyone enjoyed this special Sunday night through fun performances and notable awards. On social media, many viewers discussed their reactions to the performances and award recipients. The conversation continues throughout this week and might even encourage you to join in.
