How the Music Industry is Impacting Conversations About Mental Health

Various musicians in the music industry are taking action to normalize conversations about mental health through their music, music videos and platforms such as their social media and interviews. Artists such as XXXtentacion, Billie Eilish are one of the many few who have become known for their ‘sad teen’ aesthetic. Some say that this has been beneficial in terms of removing the stigma around mental health while others argue that this may be promoting the trend of the ‘sad teen’ vibe. According to the World Health Organization (WHO), there are approximately 800,000 people that are lost to suicide annually. Considering […]

Festival of Lights

Like most Torontonians in February, I’m sick of winter. The wind is biting, the ice is life-threatening, and the TTC is late. (Although, let’s be real, that happens regardless of the season.) With the shorter winter days, it’s hard not to feel as if the city’s constantly shrouded in darkness, shivering in our Timberlands as we bitterly pine for summer. In these hollow months following Christmas and New Years, it seems as if there isn’t anything else to do but wait for the warmth to return. But in the midst of the dark and the cold and the slush, […]

tiff Next Wave

Are you a broke university student who’s feeling stressed because of school and need to have a little fun? Well I got just the thing for you. If you think the non-profit organization, TIFF only runs the major Toronto International Film Festival every year, only to hibernate the rest of the year; you’ve joined my mother on the list of people who think TIFF doesn’t run after the festival. Every year, since 2010, TIFF has run an annual festival, called TIFF Next Wave. The festival aims to support and help growth the next generation of film enthusiasts and filmmakers. In […]

Toronto Light Festival

The Toronto Light Festival is back, for its third year in a row, at the Distillery District. With contributions from over twenty-two local and international artists, there’s so much to see. While some displays are there for aesthetic purposes, making it great for photos, others are actually informal. One educational installation to look out for, is the giant 35-foot tall polar bear. Entitled “Longview” by Don Kennell, this structure is constructed out of car hoods, representing how the carbon footprint affects habitats. Yes, the light festival does take place during some of the coldest months; however, conveniently, the Distillery District […]

7 Rings of Backlash

Pop singer, Ariana Grande recently released a single titled “7 Rings” which outlines her success and financial stability.  As soon as the song was released, people began to talk about how Grande’s new song made them feel about the amount of money in their pockets, and how similar certain parts of the song sounded like songs that had already been released. Despite the song reminding fans that they don’t have nearly as much money as Grande does, many claim to be happy for her because of the rough year she had in 2018.  Hours later, memes began circulating the internet. The Commuters Guidebook: Essentials for Traveling

I’m a regular public transportation user. Subway, buses, trains, cabs, and then some. Over the past few years, I’ve gathered the essentials for traveling which I will now share with Ryerson students that also can’t afford living downtown Toronto. Always bring something to read. Since there’s no service or Wifi on the subway, I usually print off my readings for school. It makes time fly and forces me to actually do my readings. Also, magazines are underrated. They’re light enough to carry in your bag, cheap, and it’s fun to look at books with photos every so often. It’s super […]

The Pains of Growing: Alessia Cara

Twenty-two year old Canadian artist, Alessia Cara, released her second album on November 30 titled The Pains of Growing.   When listening to the album in its entirety, I tried listening for a pattern in the order of the songs. Although there are no evident patters, it was very easy to tell that all of her songs had to do with some of the experiences she had transitioning from adolescence to adulthood. The overall message of the album is that we need to become aware of the pressure society puts on us to grow up so fast.  We are expected to […]
