“Being Black In…” is a podcast created and hosted by Deja Pochun and Maryan Haye. The show gives an inside look into what life is like for us as Black women growing up in a Westernized nation like Canada. We speak to our experiences in different spaces- from grocery stores to pop concerts, and discuss how our identity impacts the way we are perceived by others in these spaces. We will not sugar coat our thoughts or experiences; so often, we are not given a space to speak up about the discrimination, racism, and micro-aggressions we face, and we want to use this show as a safe place to let out our thoughts. That being said, we will also try to make sure the show is relatable, and try to discuss our stories in “lighter” contexts, in order to both entertain the audience and ourselves.
Every week, we will have a new topic or space we will discuss “being Black in”. One of the hosts will start off with using a personal anecdote connecting to the subject, while the other host will react, add commentary, or even echo with their own experiences. We will then try to link our topic to pop culture and similar cases in the media, and perhaps look to social channels to see what others are saying about this topic before we wrap off for the week. Our show will be fun, realistic, and insightful, and we hope to allow our voices to shine.
