Easy Winter Fashion

It can be hard to be fashionable in the cold weather that we get in Toronto.  Since winter coats, boots, gloves, and scarves are often essential for most of the school year, it can be really easy to focus more on staying warm rather than worrying about fashion.  For the record, there is absolutely no shame in solely focusing on staying warm, I do this all the time.

Clothes can also be very expensive so the following clothing items are catered to us students who like to be fashionable on a budget.  I always recommend thrift shopping since it is more environmentally friendly and very underrated! As long as you have the time and patience, you can find some really great pieces of clothing!  Something I have learned about thrifting that can help tremendously is learning how to alter and change clothing items to your own preference. By cutting and sewing things like jeans and shirts you can make clothes fit and make older looking clothes more fashionable. If this is something you are interested in but you don’t quite know where to start, I would highly recommend watching “Thrift Flip” videos on YouTube.

Now, for easy ways to make warm outfits more fashionable:

  1. Turtlenecks!

You can never go wrong with a turtleneck in the winter.  There are tightly fit turtlenecks and oversized and baggy ones, so whichever you prefer could be a really good way to step up your fashion game.  Turtlenecks look really good with leggings, jeans, and baggy khaki pants. If you happen to be a fan of layers, you can always wear some sort of jacket or sweater over the turtleneck.

2. Sweaters!

Sweaters are my go-to.  They are comfortable, warm, and easy to pair with other items of clothing.  Sweaters also look good with leggings or jeans. You can stay warm by wearing a long sleeve shirt or t-shirt underneath the sweater.

3. T-shirts!

T-shirts can be warm in the winter as long as you focus on layering clothes.  T-shirts can be layered with long sleeve shirts underneath them, or simply by wearing a zip up sweater or some sort of jacket overtop of the t-shirt.

4. Jewelry!

Wearing jewelry is an easy way to make it look like you put more effort into your outfit than you actually did.  Jewelry is an overall good addition to fashion all year, no matter the season. Things like rings, necklaces/chokers, anklets, bracelets, and earrings are always a nice way to make your outfit pop.

5. Last but not least, boots!

We all love our sneakers, but sometimes it’s best that we do not wear them outside in the snow and slush.  Not only will they most likely get dirty but they are not usually very warm. Some popular boots that go well with almost any outfit you throw together are Dr. Martens, Chelsea Boots, and Timberlands.  If these are two expensive, there are very similar looking shoes to these online and in cheaper shoe stores.

The most important thing, when it comes to fashion, is that you feel comfortable with what you are wearing and that it reflects who you are.  Make sure that you like the clothes you wear and are not wearing clothes you feel unhappy in just because they are popular. Be happy, comfortable, and stay warm!
