Pablo Cheese Tart & Uncle Tetsu’s Japanese Cheesecake

Pablo Cheese Tart and Uncle Tetsu’s Japanese Cheesecake are both delicious Japanese dessert chains with locations in Downtown Toronto, only a 10 minute walk from Ryerson University too. Initially expanded from Japan, you can now find Pablo and Uncle Tetsu locations not just in Toronto, but all around the world too. For instance, Taiwan, Australia and even Singapore. Both of these desserts bakery are super popular and busy throughout the day, especially on weekends. There are always line ups of tourists and locals waiting to buy cheesecake and cheesetarts. I love both of their cheese dessert very much, because they taste different and special each in their own way. Therefore, it is really really really hard for me to pick which one I like better, so I’m just going to recommend both!

PABLO Cheese Tart

  • Matcha Cheese Tart $17.00           | Rating  ★★★★☆
  • Pablo Mini Cheese Tart $3.99       | Rating  ★★★★☆

Pablo is famous for their delicious freshly baked cheese tarts. Its location is less than a 5 minute walk from the Eaton Centre, with small cozy cafe seatings great for friends to go together. Pablo has different sizes from a regular 6’’ to a mini. Aside from their signature flavours of original cheese, matcha and chocolate, they also have a variety of seasonal flavours offered in the mini tarts too! Like peach, purple potato and mango. If you’re not a big fan of cheese tarts, Pablo also sells soft-serves, shakes and creative beverages as well.

Being a matcha lover myself, I instantly fell in love with their matcha cheese tart after taking the very first bite. Their matcha is so rich and creamy mixed in with the melty cheese! It had a well-balanced sweetness from matcha matching to the subtle cheese. The tart was even filled layers of azuki red bean paste and shiratama (white mochi) inside. The flakey baked crust was perfect with the “custard-like” filling. As well, if you want to try the seasonal cheese tart flavours, it’s better to call in advance to reserve for pick up or go early in the morning before they all sell out. Even though their desserts are a little bit on the pricier side, it’s still nice to grab it once in a while to treat yourself on a special occasion.

UNCLE TETSU Japanese Cheesecake

  • Cheesecake $10.00     | Rating  ★★★★☆

You can find 3 Uncle Tetsu’s Japanese Cheesecake locations all in 5-10 mins walkable distance from the core of Downtown Toronto. Uncle Tetsu even has a convenient location at Union Station, great for commuters to grab on the go or bring as a treat back home. Japanese cheesecakes are especially famous for their jiggly, airy and fluffy texture cheesecake. Uncle Tetsu’s cheesecake is so popular that they even limit down to 1 purchase of cheesecake per person during some rush hours. Different from other cheesecakes you might have tried in the best, Japanese cheese cake is not as dense, it has more of a “fuwa-fuwa” (meaning light and fluffy) and “soufflé-like” texture. Uncle Tetsu’s signature cheesecake also comes in matcha and chocolate flavours too. Even though I got a chance to try out their original flavour,  trying out their matcha cheesecake is still on my ever-growing “to-eat list.”

I love that there’s two options of eating the cheesecake, warm or cold, for 2 different kinds of flavour. I only tried eating it cold, but I heard that it tastes even more  fluffy and “cloud-like” when heated up warm! The cheesecake is so soft that it literally melted in my mouth. It’s not overly sweet or creamy, it has the perfect moist texture and light flavour that makes you just want to keep eating more.

Other than cheesecakes, Uncle Tetsu Bake location also sells freshly baked 3 inch cheese tarts, and madeleines too.

Have you tried Pablo cheese tart or Uncle Tetsu’s cheesecake before? Next time if you’re craving for something sweet and cheesy, make sure you give them both a try!
